Only a few Inuit people ( Eskimos ) live on the Canadian Tundra. They make round houses from snow and ice called igloos and they catch seals, caribou, and fish for food. They have no vegetables or fruit at all in the long winter, and few in summer. Traditionally, they lived in igloos and traveled on sleds pulled by dogs, but now they live in permanent wood houses and travel by snowmobiles. They wear furs from the animals they catch. It is a very different kind of desert life. Some animals can survive the cold winters. They have heavy fur and plenty of blubber ( or fat ) and the young grow quickly in the very short and cool summers. Some animals such as polar bears are the same colour as the land or snow, so they are hard to see or hunt. There are polar bears, caribou (reindeer ) , seals, whales and fish in the ocean.

A century ago, the ancestors of Emirati people didn’t have electricity. This meant that they couldn’t save food by freezing it or putting it in cans, but they had many other clever ways to save the food. For example, dates (“tamr”) were pressed until a thick, sweet syrup came out of them. However, the main way of saving or preserving food was to dry it. The most important dried foods were fish, milk and limes.

Fish have always been plentiful in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. When fishermen caught small fish (“jashe’a”), they spread them on the ground and dried them in the sun. Larger fish (“maleh”) had to be covered with salt before they were left.

Milk didn’t last long in the days before refrigerators and air conditioning. Yegat is a kind of dried milk that has been mixed with salt an shaped into round balls. In the past, people got lemons and limes from Oman or Somalia and dried them in the sun. Drying food was a good way to preserve it, but it had other benefits. When you dry food, the healthy vitamins remain and the process makes the flavour stronger.

A unique custom in the Arab Middle East is the gifts given to the bride by her groom. The dowry is defined as the financial gift given by a man to his prospective wife before their wedding. The dowry can take many forms and differs from culture to culture. In some Middle Eastern cultures, the groom pays the dowry to the father, who may in return buy jewelry for his daughter. In others, the money is used to set up a future household in preparation for the couple's future life together. The dowry has roots from ancient Middle Eastern history and from religion.
In Ancient Egypt, the "mahr" was the initial payment by the groom to his fiancé used to set up the house and furniture before the wedding. Another gift called "Shabka" was the jewelry given to

the bride before or after the wedding.
The Middle Eastern groom is burdened with a huge financial obligation. He must, in addition to paying the “mahr” and “shabka” (jewelry), pay for all wedding expenses. In traditional Islamic celebrations, there are separate wedding receptions for the men and the women. The weddings are usually very expensive. High dowries and expensive weddings are forcing some men in the Arab world to marry outside their culture or to wait at least 10 years of working and saving until they make enough money for them to get married. Others borrow enormous amounts as loans and spend at
least 5 years paying them off.
